Most printers have two print methods; thermal transfer and direct transfer. Thermal transfer uses synthetic labels or standard paper with an ink ribbon to produce a permanent print. Direct transfer uses heat sensitive paper to produce black print with a life expectancy of 6-12 months, less if exposed to direct sunlight.
